Bob And Earl

 



Bob and Earl were originally Earl Lee Nelson and Bobby Byrd (Bobby Day) but in the early 1960s, Bobby Byrd decided to pursue his solo career, and Bobby Relf became the new Bobby. Bobby Relf had sung in a number of vocal groups which also included Barry White, who was originally thought to have arranged “Harlem Shuffle” for producer Fred Smith. It is now known that the arrangement of Harlem Shuffle was by Gene Page. Earl Lee Nelson also recorded under the name Jackie Lee, maintaining a solo career, and is probably best remembered for his records of “The Duck” and “Darkest Days”. The duo had already split up when “Harlem Shuffle” became a big hit in the UK on the Sue label, and reunited to tour and for further recordings. Relf and Barry White continued to work together for a number of years, Relf contributing songs to White’s LPs.

Robert Nelson Relf was born on January 10, 1937 and died on November 20, 2007.

Barry White (Barry Eugene Carter) was born on September 12, 1944 and died on July 4, 2003.

Earl Lee Nelson (Jackie Lee) was born on 8 September 1928, and died on 12 July 2008.

Eugene Edgar Page Jnr. was born on 13 September 1939 and died on 24 August 1998.

Robert James Byrd was born in Fort Worth, Texas on July 1, 1930 and died in Los Angeles, California on July 27, 1990.

June Bateman

June Bateman-Watts was born Marian June Batemon on November 17, 1939. The recording  “Believe me darling” by June Bateman appears on ILP 920, “50 Minutes 24 Seconds of Recorded Dynamite” as well as single WI 347. A single, "I don't wanna"/"Nobles Theme" was issued on Sue WI 347 in July 1965. June was understood to have retired to DeLand, Florida in 1984 and for some years played an active role in the annual  Noble “Thin Man” Watts festival .  "Rate Your Music" note that June Bateman died on  13 February 2016. Anita Wood

  Anita Wood | Copyright Control | 25007 Anita Marie Wood Brewer was born in 1937 and was a girl friend for a time to Elvis Presley.  Her recording of  "Dream Baby"/ “This has happened before” (US Santo 9054, 1964) was issued on Sue WI 328. She sang with Andy Williams, uncredited, on his 1959 hit of “The Hawaiian Wedding Song” and appeared regularly in his television series. Anita Wood died  of pneumonia at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi,  on 29 June 2023, age 85.
