Don and Dewey were Don Francis Bowman “Sugarcane” Harris and Dewey Steven Terry. They met in 1949 and were friends who joined a doo wop group, The Squires.
Multi instrumentalist, singer and song writer Don Francis Bowman Harris was born in Pasadena, California on June 18, 1938 ; Johnny Otis gave him the Sugarcane nickname. He is considered a pioneer in the amplification of the violin. An addict throughout his career, he suffered from Pulmonary disease and died in Los Angeles, California on November 27, 1999.
Singer, song writer, pianist and bassist Dewey Steven Terry was born in Los Angeles, California on July 17, 1937 and died in Los Angeles, California on May 11, 2003.
They were well known song writers, their songs included “Farmer John”, “Justine”, “I’m leaving it up to you” and others.
The duo of Don and Dewey formed in 1956 and were signed to Specialty Records; the legendary drummer Earl Palmer was involved in the production of their recordings, but they did not have any commercial successes.
