Songwriter, film music composer, band leader, mentor, arranger and record producer Robert Alexander "Bumps" Blackwell was born in Seattle, Washington, USA on 23 May 1918. By his early 20s he was leading a jazz band which included among others Ray Charles and Quincy Jones. He is best known for supervising and producing recordings by Little Richard, and for mentoring the careers of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson, Lloyd Price, Sam Cooke, Herb Alpert, Larry Williams and Sly & The Family Stone.
Among the records he produced were "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke and "Long Tall Sally" by Little Richard. After his death, his music was used in the films "Predator" (1987) and "Roadhouse" (1989).
Mr Blackwell died in Hacienda Heights, California, on 9th March 1985, from pneumonia.
