The Spencer Davis Group formed in 1963 and were Spencer Davis (guitar), Steve Winwood (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Muff Winwood (bass guitar) and Pete York (drums).
Spencer David Nelson Davies was born in Swansea, Wales on 17 July 1939 and died on 19 October 2020. He became interested in music and playing instruments, and languages, when he was 6. At 16 he moved to London and became a Civil Servant, but decided to return to his own school and get his A Levels. In 1960 he went to Birmingham University to study German. In 1963 he went to a performance of the Muff Wood Jazz Band and he invited Steve and Muff Winwood to join his own band.
Spencer Davis died of pneumonia in Los Angeles on 19 October 2020.
Stephen Laurence Winwood was born in Handsworth, Birmingham, on 12 May 1948.
Mervyn "Muff" Winwood was born in Erdington, Birmingham, on 15 June 1943.
Pete York was born in Middlesborough, Yorkshire, on 15 August 1942.
