Bandleader and A&R man Eugene Clarence Redd III was born in 1924 and is mainly associated with King Records, where, among others, he produced records by James Brown. In 1950, he joined Earl Bostic and his Orchestra playing the vibraphone and trumpet. He is the father of Sharon Redd and Gene Redd Jr. He played with the Red Caps during his service with the US Forces. He founded the Delite Record label in 1969.
