The Anglos

  The Anglos’ record of “Incense”/”You’re fooling me” has been issued on a number of labels including Brit and Fontana. Some web sites still think it was by singer Steve Winwood and the Spencer Davis Group. The Anglos were an American group fronted by lead singer Joe Webster, who had sung with a number of different groups in the Detroit area. Gene Allison

  Gene Allison Versie Eugene Allison (Gene Allison) was born in Peagram, Tennessee on August 29, 1934. He began singing in a Church choir with his brother Leevert, who later also became a well known singer, then sang with various gospel groups including The Skylarks.  He is mainly known for his few hits which include the classic “You can make it if you try”, which was recorded in 1957 and was his debut recording for VeeJay Records (VJ 256). The song became widely known from a cover version by The Rolling Stones. “Lets sit and talk” (VJ 286, July 1958, did not chart) by Gene Allison was released in the UK on Sue LP ILP 943 “Dr Soul”. Towards the end of the 1960s, after recording for a number of labels, and despite being admired by other singers (including Sam Cooke), he retired from public singing and enjoyed a private life. Bobby Lee Trammell

Singer and politician Bobby Lee Trammell was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on January 31, 1934. He began playing music while in school and originally was interested in country and western music. He moved to Long Beach, California after completing school and tried to secure a recording contract. Meanwhile he secured a job at a Ford plant. He started making rockabilly records in 1957 but kept getting into various scrapes; a protest on a radio tower over a station’s refusal to play his record ended with him having to be rescued from the tower; at a date with Jerry Lee Lewis, he had a tantrum and destroyed Lewis’ piano. That resulted in him being blackballed. He went into US politics as a representative for his home state Arkansas, being elected in 1997, and died in Jonesboro, Arkansas on February 20, 2008.   Image: Undated | Public Domain

Patti La Belle

  Patricia Louise Holte (Patti Labelle), also known as "The Godmother of Soul", was born on May 24, 1944. She spent sixteen years leading the Bluebelles. She holds two Grammy awards. "Down the aisle" was the first major hit the group had for the King record company. The personnel on this recording is Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash and Cindy Birdsong. The recording was made in Philadelphia (at Cameo Parkway) in 1963. Patti LaBelle has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. She is also a television programme host and actress. Ike And Tina Turner

  Musician, band leader, song writer, talent scout and record producer Ike Luster Turner was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on November 5, 1931. He was a talent scout and producer for Sun Records and Modern Records. He and his band recorded the song “Rocket 88” at Sun Studios in 1951, which is now regarded as one of the foundations of rock and roll and rhythm and blues music. He helped B. B. King, Bobby Bland and Howlin’ Wolf establish their careers. In 1960 he formed the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Ike Turner was alleged to be a Cocaine addict and he died in San Marcus, California on December 12, 2007, allegedly of an overdose. Anna Mae Bullock (Tina Turner) was born in Brownsville, Tennessee on November 26, 1939 and died on Tuesday 23 May 2023 after a long illness, at her home near Zurich, Switzerland. Willie Mabon

  Singer, song writer, pianist and harmonica player Willie James Mabon was born in Hollywood, Tennessee, on 24 October 1925 and started making rhythm and blues records in the 1950s, recording for Chess and a succession of other record labels. Tim Whitsett

  Paul Timothy Whitsett was born in Jackson, US on 23 December 1943, and is noted as a singer, writer, musician and record producer. He started recording in his teens for a variety of record companies. “Macks by the Tracks” was recorded for Rim records and issued in the UK on Sue WI 318. The song was written by Tim and his brother Carson Whitsett, who were both members of the Imperial Show Band which was disbanded when members were called up for active service. It is believed that “Macks by the Tracks” is by the band. By the early 1970s he was working at Stax Records in charge of their copyright publishing division. Barbara George

  Barbara George Image: Public Domain | Undated R&B singer and song writer Barbara Ann Smith (Barbara George) was born at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 16th August, 1942. She began singing in a Church choir. She carried a note book around with her, jotting down ideas for songs. She was discovered by singer Jessee Hill who recommended her to record producer Harold Battiste. Her first record for him, the self-penned “I know” (AFO 302, 1961) was an immediate success, spent four weeks at number one on the R&B chart, reached no. 3 on the Billboard pop chart, and earned a gold disc. (It was AFO’s biggest hit.)The tune was based on the gospel hymn “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”. Her only album, “I know”, issued in 1961, has twelve tracks, eleven her own songs. Unfortunately George had problems with addiction but on recovery returned to the stage in the 1980s. By the late 1980s George had given up music, but can be heard singing on the 1990 album “Victory Mixture” ...

Bobby Hendricks

  Singer Robert Raymond “Bobby” Hendricks was born in Columbus, Ohio on February 22, 1938 and from the age of 16 had a career with several vocal groups leading to membership of The Drifters (he sang lead on their single Drip Drop).  Itchy was his main solo hit, in 1958, and was first issued in the UK on London American 45-HL 8714.  He continued to perform as one of The Original Drifters. The UK Sue single has his name incorrectly credited as “Henricks”. On the recording he is backed by The Coasters, who could not be credited for contractual reasons. Mr. Hendricks died from complications from Altzheimer’s Disease at his home in Lancaster, California, on 25 March 2022, aged 84 years. Image: Last FM
